Tower defense is a strategy genre with a simple promise: enemies are coming, and you decide where the defenses go. Waves of attackers travel toward something you must protect, such as a castle, a crystal, a space station or an energy core. You cannot fight them directly (with one exception, Hero Defense). Instead you build towers, and the towers do the fighting. Whether you win depends on the plan you make before and between waves.
Every tower has a few core numbers: cost, damage, range (shown as a circle when you place or select it) and attack speed. Most towers also have a specialty. Splash towers such as cannons and mortars damage every enemy inside a blast radius. Slow towers chill enemies so every other tower gets more shots. Chain towers send lightning jumping between targets. Support towers such as the Amplifier and Radar don't attack at all; they strengthen the towers around them. Towers fire automatically at the enemy chosen by their targeting mode: First, Last, Strongest, Weakest, Closest or Fastest.
Enemies arrive in numbered waves, and you press Start Wave when you are ready. Each wave mixes enemy types in a set order. Fast runners test your coverage, tanks test raw damage, armored enemies punish weak hits, swarms test splash damage and healers repair their allies. Later waves bring more enemies with more health, and many games end with a boss that has phases and special attacks. Our guide to understanding enemy waves explains how to read what is coming.
Placement is the heart of the genre. A tower that sees the path for only a moment fires only a few shots. The same tower placed inside a bend, where the route passes on two or three sides, can fire at each enemy several times. Good players look for corners, long straight lines for piercing shots and choke points where several routes merge. In Jungle Defense, the mud patches that slow enemies are the best places to build. See our tower placement tips for practical patterns.
Most towers have three levels. Upgrading usually raises damage and often range or attack speed, and the third level often adds a special property such as critical hits or a stronger slow. The key decision is build or upgrade. Early on, more towers usually means more coverage. Later, upgrading a well-placed tower is often better value than squeezing a new one into a poor spot. Robot Defense goes further with a level-4 specialisation: two branches per tower, and you choose one.
In fixed-path games the map designer decides the route, so your job is to find the best spots along it. In maze games you decide the route. Enemies always take the shortest open path, and every tower you build changes it. You are not allowed to block the path completely, so the skill is making the path as long as possible while keeping your damage towers at the turns. Our comparison of fixed-path and maze tower defense covers both in detail.
Gold (or Energy, Supplies or Mana, depending on the game) comes from defeated enemies and a bonus for every wave you clear. Selling a tower returns 70% of what you spent on it, so moving a tower always costs something. Endless Defense adds 5% interest on banked credits, which rewards saving when your defense is stable. A good rule of thumb: spend enough to stop leaks, then spend the rest where it adds the most damage. Our economy guide goes deeper.
Every game on Tower Defense Hub runs directly in your browser. There is nothing to install and no account to create. Pick a tower from the build bar, tap a highlighted tile to place it, and press Start Wave. Tap any tower to upgrade it, sell it or change its targeting. You can pause at any time and still build while paused, and you can switch between 1×, 2× and 3× speed. Best scores, favorites and recently played games are stored only in your browser.
All games work with a mouse, touch or keyboard alone. On desktop, number keys select towers, Space pauses, F changes speed and N starts the next wave. The arrow keys move a map cursor, and Enter builds. On phones and tablets every control is a large button and nothing depends on hovering. Landscape orientation or the Fullscreen button gives the map the most room. Our mobile controls guide has more tips.
